NIBC 2012 Event Itinerary

Day One: January 11th, 2012

Opening Keynote

The opening keynote speaker will welcome all delegates and describe the intricacies of the investment banking industry. They will share their experiences and emphasize the importance of being involved in initiatives such as the National Investment Banking Competition & Conference. In the past, keynote speakers such as Mr. Don Lindsay, President and CEO of Teck Resources, and Mr. Patrick Meneley, Vice Chair Investment Banking of TD Securities, shared their experiences at NIBC.

Overview of the Full-Service Investment Bank

Intended as an introduction and conceptual guide to the various presentations and workshops at NIBC, this presentation provides a holistic view of the core products and services a full-service investment bank offers in the greater context of the financial system. To lay a foundation, the presentation briefly defines common terms to be encountered throughout the conference and competition. In addition, this presentation exposes delegates to the different types of work available to individuals in various divisions of an investment bank.

Industry Groups in Investment Banking

One of the two groups an investment banking division is usually divided into; industry coverage groups are an important aspect of an investment bank that should be understood by all determined to enter this competitive field. This workshop will introduce delegates to the variety of sector groups, including Consumer/Retail, Oil and Gas, Financial Institution Group (FIG) and Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT). 

Sales and Trading Panel

This panel will have experienced Traders and Sales Representatives talking about the industry, market making practices, client relationship fundamentals, and careers in this field. It will provide a description of some of the desks commonly seen in the S&T division. The panel is expected to be interactive with a moderator asking questions at the beginning of the session and delegates asking questions and giving comments during the Q&A session.

Corporate Finance From a Client’s Perspective 

This consists of a panel that provides an overview of the interactions between clients and investment bankers during financial transactions and deals, with emphasis on the roles each party performs. This year’s panel will consist of three professionals in the industry: Brad Bardua, Chief Financial Officer of Pacific BioEnergy Corporation; Daniel Gumprich, Chief Financial Officer of Sterling Shoes Inc.; and Joseph J. Ovsenek, Senior Vice President of Silver Standard. As a result of the discussion, delegates will understand the dynamics of a deal and will have a more comprehensive view of the industry.

 Investment Banking Around the World

Ever wondered what working in an investment bank in Asia, Europe or the United States would be like? This workshop will be run by a select panel of professionals from investment banks around the world and will provide delegates with an unbeatable insight into the differences in investment banking cultures worldwide. This new addition is the perfect workshop to complement the increasingly geographically diverse set of Conference and Competition delegates attending NIBC 2012.

Open Q&A Panel with Investment Bankers

This session will provide an opportunity for delegates to learn about the day-to-day activities of investment bankers. The session is expected to be highly interactive and aims to illustrate the life of an Analyst, Associate and Vice President in an investment bank.

Career Fair

A new addition to this year’s Conference; the Career Fair will provide delegates with an unprecedented opportunity to network with industry professionals representing Canadian and International investment banks. Delegates will submit resumes prior to the Conference, which will be combined into NIBC’s Résumé Book. The Résumé Book will be disseminated to investment banks participating at the Career Fair and all sponsors of NIBC.

Delegate Networking Session & Evening Social

Conference delegates will have time to get to know each other and review material for the next day in informal group activities. We would like to ensure that delegates have the opportunity to foster their network and form meaningful connections with their peers before day two of the event commences.

 

Day Two: January 12th, 2012

 

Morning Keynote Speech

A Managing Director based in Vancouver will provide an overview of their experiences and the lessons learned throughout their career in the investment banking industry.

MDA Training: Live Trading Simulation

Participants will have the chance to compete with other attendees in a highly engaging and challenging 3-hour Trading Simulation facilitated by MDA Training. Participants will be assigned to the role of either Trader, Market Maker or Researcher and will gain hands on experience in planning trading strategies, analyzing financial information, running meetings and executing trades in a real life trading scenario.

Corporate Finance and Capital Markets Workshop Series

The delegates will develop a better understanding of investment banking, private equity and the capital markets by attending workshops run by dedicated industry professionals.Delegates will attend three out of the eight workshops according to preferences indicated upon application to NIBC.

  • The IPO Process

This workshop will introduce students to the process of listing a private company on the stock market. It is designed as a practitioners guide to the IPO process and will cover the preparation, execution, and marketing components of taking a company public. Discussion will revolve around a real-world example of an IPO deal to aid in understanding the logistical steps taken to execute an IPO from an investment banking perspective.

  • Mergers and Acquisitions

Experienced speakers will introduce delegates to the concept of Mergers and Acquisitions in this workshop. It will uncover the major reasons for M&A activity and will entertain real-world examples in order to understand the process required to successfully execute M&A’s from an investment banking perspective.

  • Valuation Methodologies

This workshop will introduce students to the common valuation methodologies utilized by investment banks. Using practical examples, the workshop will examine in detail the concepts of comparable company analysis, precedent transaction analysis, and discounted cash flow modelling. The workshop will also increase delegates awareness of the benefits and pitfalls of each approach.

  • Equity Modelling

This workshop will equip delegates with essential tools to write a professional research report. It will provide an overview of equity research and the skills required of a successful Research Associate. Through real life examples, delegates are expected to learn the technicalities of the field and how to better prepare for a career in research.

  • Hedge Funds

This workshop is ideal for all delegates aiming to gain a better understanding of a potential career path after investment banking. It will provide delegates with a fundamental, first principles understanding of hedge funds, their strategies, and their risks. 

  • Private Equity Panel

This workshop consists of a panel of experienced private equity representatives who will discuss their views on the industry, key trends, and careers in this field. The discussion will also provide attendees with insight into the role private equity can play in the financial markets, both privately and publicly. The panel is expected to be highly interactive, with a moderator asking questions at the beginning of the session. Delegates will have the opportunity to ask questions and comment during the Q&A session.

  • Women in Capital Markets

Run by a selection of successful female professionals currently working in Canada’s capital markets, this workshop is designed to increase awareness and understanding of women’s current place in the financial markets and to examine the opportunities available to women today. 

  • Career Focus: Learn How They Succeeded

In this workshop, delegates will have the chance to hear from Junior professionals who started their careers in the finance industry. They will share their experiences during the recruitment process and at work. As a result, delegates will gain insight into career alternatives and the opportunities available to them in the industry

Wine & Cheese

This social function will provide conference delegates with an opportunity to connect with investment banking professionals over wine and cheese. There will be a large number of industry professionals present with experience in New York, London, Hong Kong, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver who will be keen to share their experiences with the delegates.

Gala Dinner and Final Judging Round

The conference and competition culminates in the Gala Dinner featuring the final keynote address and final keynote address and final competition round. A gourmet dinner will be served in the Crystal Pavilion of the Pan Pacific Hotel, as Ian Telfer, Chairman of the Board of Goldcorp Inc. and former CEO of the company shares his insights with students and prominent business leaders. The top 25 teams out of the initial 132 from across Canada competing in the Preliminary Round of the NIBC Case Competition will present to senior professionals form leading Canadian investment Banks. The Gala Dinner will conclude with the awards ceremony and announcement of the winners of the competition.

Networking and Social Activities

At all times the focus of NIBC is on connecting students to successful industry professionals who have worked in capital markets around the world and are eager to share their experiences with delegates aiming to enter the industry. We have arranged opportunities to speak with a large number of industry professionals as well as likeminded peers from across Canada during the Wine & Cheese Function, Gala Dinner, and evening social events.
